It's Carvin' Time!

For your next class (October 25th), you need to bring a pumpkin in which you have carved a likeness of yourself (a portrait). You can choose how large or small you want your pumpkin to be, as well as any facial expression, pose, props, etc. that you want to include in your "portrait"(the carved pumpkin). You also have the option of carving something that you think represents you...be sure to challenge yourself. No growing occurs from doing what you already know and feel fully comfortable with!
Check out the examples on the slideshow listed below to see how others have conquered the many shifts in value we see on our faces. You may work from a photograph or from observation in a mirror, but in either case, you MUST SET UP A LIGHT SOURCE FOR CONTRAST! By using a light source and creating a strong sense of contrast, you will be able to see the values a lot easier. When carving, you will want to simplify the different values you see to two or three main values (again, check out how this is handled in the slide show below!).

IMPORTANT! Please make sure to carve a 2 to 3 inch hole in the bottom of your pumpkin. We will be setting them up and illuminating them with strands of lights. The lights need to go in the hole in the bottom.

ALSO! Check out this slide show for more inspiration from stencil artists, poster artists, and printmakers. They further the concept of simplifying multiple values into two or three main values.
